The New Haven Gilbert Family

Since the compiler of this genealogy is Walter Gilbert, the occurance of a second line of Gilberts, quite separate and distinct from his direct family line, is of special interest. However, this would probably not be worth a separate mention save the large number of his New Haven ancestors that this Gilbert family married with.

  1. Matthew Gilbert, died 1680 in New Haven Colony. He was deputy-governor of the colony. He married Jane Baker. Matthew was uncle of Sarah Gilbert who married Zachariah How.
    1. John Gilbert, baptized April 1644 New Haven, died November 26, 1673, New Haven; married Sarah Gregson, daughter of Thomas and Jane Gregson.
      1. John Gilbert, born October 3, 1668, died December 1741; Sergeant; married first, Mary Ives, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Yale) Ives. He married second, Abigail Heaton, an ancestor in this genealogy. (First six children by Mary, seventh by Abigail.)
        1. John Gilbert was born on October 9, 1692, and died on July 8, 1713, in New Haven. On May 28, 1712, he married Abigail Todd, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Bradley) Todd. Samuel Todd was the son of Christopher and Grace (Middlebrook) Todd. Mary Bradley is the daughter of William and Alice (Prichard) Bradley.

        3. Jonathan Gilbert was born on August 8, 1700, in New Haven, and died in July 1758. He married Mary Chidsey, daughter of Caleb and Hannah (Dickerman) Chidsey. Caleb Chidsey/Chedsey is the son of John and Elizabeth (_____) Chedsey. Hannah Dickerman is the daughter of Abraham and Mary (Cooper) Dickerman.

      3. Thomas Gilbert, born August 14, 1673, died December 23, 1711, both in New Haven. He married Sarah Peck, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Alling) Peck. Sarah Alling was the daughter of Roger and Mary (Nash) Alling. (Joseph Peck is the son of Henry Peck, he is not descended from Deacon William Peck.)
    2. Sarah Gilbert was baptized on April 7, 1646, and died on November 26, 1668. She married John Todd, son of Christopher and Grace (Middlebrook) Todd.
