William Ambrose Ten Broeck was born
on November 20, 1823, baptized
in Claverack Reformed Church
on February 1, 1824, and died
on January 14, 1866.
He married Mary Ann Comfort on May 29, 1845, daughter of Hiram and
Julia L. (Ludington) Comfort.
Per a Delaware County, New York, biographical sketch, he
... is a well-known resident of the
village of Griffin's Corners in Middletown, Delaware County, where since 1848
he has prosperously pursued the arduous profession of law. He was born in
Columbia County, November 20, 1823 ...
William A. Ten Broeck was educated at the schools in Hudson, N.Y.,
and at Lenox in the western part of
Massachusetts. Then he entered the law office of Monell
and Hogeboom in Hudson. At the expiration of
two years he changed to the office of Adams and Watson
in Catskill, where he finished his studies, and
met his matrimonial fate. On October 19, 1847, he
was admitted to the bar, at the session of the court in
Utica. In 1846 he came to Griffin's Corners, where
he as ever since remained, greatly to the advantage of
both himself and the town. He had been married one
year before, in 1845, when he was twenty-one years
old, to a lady who merited her name, Mary Ann
Comfort, the eldest daughter of Hiram and Julia
(Ludington) Comfort, of Catskill. Mr. Comfort was
the thriving owner of a sash and blind factory, and
died when only forty years of age, leaving five
girls, almost a match for the six Ten Broeck boys, already
mentioned. These girls were Mary, who became Mrs. Ten Broeck;
Julia named for her mother; Helen,
Charlotte, Caroline. Their mother lived to be
seventy-three years old, and was an earnest member of the
Episcopal church, as was her much respected husband. |

Cornelia Christina Ten Broeck was born
on November 26, 1824, and baptized
in Claverack Reformed Church
on December 18, 1824.
[She is not mentioned in Runk.]

| vii. |
Jeremiah Ten Broeck was baptized
in Claverack Reformed Church
on December 20, 1825.
[This date from church records; Runk gives his birthdate as
March 22, 1826.]
He married on November 27, 1851, at Flatbush, Maria Keifer, daughter of
William and Ann (Osterhout) Keifer. He was a farmer in Saugerties.

|
Her second marriage was to
John Harder.
He died
on January 27, 1862.
Mellenville Union Cemetery records from the Columbia County Historical Society
show that Margaret Becker, wife of John Harder, was born November 7, 1792, and
died September 23, 1868. The Bible of Margaret Lydia (Tenbroeck) Youngblood
indicates that John Harder died January 27, 1862. The only reason for him to be
mentioned in the Bible is that he was part of the family. Therefore, he must
have been Margaret's second husband; her first died at age 44. The Bible
gives Margaret's birthday as November 9, 1795.
William died at age 44 and 3 months. Dutch Reformed Church records do not show
his wife buried in the same cemetery. It is likely that she remarried.
A Biographical Review of Delaware County, NY (correct title to be
added) includes the following in a biographical sketch of William A. Ten Broeck,
son of this William and Margaret.
William, was born on the homestead [250 acres of
land and a beautiful residence in Columbia County, near Mellenville], where he
grew to manhood. He married
Margaret Becker, the daughter of an enterprising Columbia County farmer.
After their marriage they took the homestead, which they greatly improved,
and there they raised a family of six boys...

-
Per Runk, William's father had a brother, Jeremias;
William's mother had a sister, Jane; Jeremias and Jane married (second cousin
marriages were common within the Ten Broeck family). Their second child was
Abraham Ten Broeck. He married Lavina Becker on February 18, 1821.
She was born on November 14, 1799 (four years after Margaret Becker),
and died January 31, 1877. It is likely that they were sisters.
-
Columbia County Historical Society records show that Lavina Ten Broeck was
buried
in the Stuyvesant Landing Cemetery, having died on January 31, 1877, at age 77.
-
Reformed Church of Claverack records at the Columbia County Historical Society
show that Abraham Ten Broeck and Lavina Becker were married in Hillsdale on
February 18, 1821. No witnesses were given.
-

Reformed Dutch Church, Hillsdale, Columbia, New York. Her parents were
Peter Bekker and Polly Suthard. Hillsdale Church records from the Historical
Society give her birth as November 14, 1799; sponsors Lyman Hawes (Haas?) and
Lovina Bekker (who are married).
-

Schoharie County, NY. Parents: George and Maria Elisabeth (Zimmer) Becker.
