In 1697, Johannes and his family moved to western New Jersey from New York (New Netherlands), only 12 years after the founding of nearby Philadelphia by William Penn. They resided in Bethlehem Township of Hunterdon County. This move was apparently prompted by the acquisition of the New Netherlands Colony by the British who changed its name to New York.
The will of
Johannes Opdyck was dated February 12, 1728/9. Except for a few
special wishes, "the Remainder Shall be Equilly divided amongst my Eight
Children and now are Living ...". Since his wife is not mentioned in the
will, it can be assumed that she predeceased him.
