44–45.  James W. McKinney was born in New York on Saturday, January 7, 1775, and died in Byron Township, Kent County, Michigan, on May 19, 1859. He died at age 84 years, 4 months and 12 days. Jemima Kemp was born in New Jersey on Saturday, May 7, 1785, and died in Kent County, Michigan, on November 7, 1868. They were both buried in Winegar Cemetery, Byron Twp., on the same lot as James K. & Ruby A. McKenney. There may be other children beside the following; the order of some is uncertain.

i. Margaret McKenney:
Margaret McKenney
Margaret McKenney
Her married name was Margaret Hartman. Her existence comes from comments by Rose Judson Gilbert on the back of a photograph of her sister, Jane. Comments on another picture imply that Margaret may have married a man named Ryers, too. She had at least three children, including: Florence, Daisy, and Allan. See pictures, below.
ii. James K. McKenney was born four miles from the mouth of the Niagara River in Canada on August 6, 1806, and died in Kent County on March 12, 1891. He and Ruby Ann Seeley were married on November 5, 1837, in Parma, New York. She was born in Vermont on February 7, 1813 and died April 17, 1885. IGI records confirm this birth information and add that she was born in St. Albans Township, Franklin County, Vermont, that her middle name was Ann, that her parents were Seth Clark Seeley and Anna Bradley, and that she had a relative named Justus Azel Seeley. [Note that the 1880 census on the LDS web site has her and her parents born in Connecticut.] The information on the following seven children is taken from the family plot in Winegar Cemetery, Byron Township, supplemented from information from the 1850 census of Kent County for James K. McKinney[sic]. It is tragic that most of their children died before age 30, outlived by their parents.
  1. Julia McKenney: born in Greece, Monroe Co., N.Y., Jan. 29, 1839, married in Byron Oct. 11, 1871, to Judson A. Norris.
  2. James C. McKenney: born in New York, was age 10 in 1850. He is most certainly the J. Clark McKenney, b Mar 20, 1840; d Feb 22, 1862 (age 21); on the same gravestone as his parents.
  3. William H. McKenney: born in New York April 8, 1841, died October 18, 1866 (age 25); buried on the same lot as his parents. Michigan marriages 1851–1900 give a William McKinney marrying Rebecca Smith in Kent Co. on September 20, 1862.
  4. Eugenia McKenney: born in New York April 24, 1843, died August 30, 1858 (age 15); on the same gravestone as her parents.
  5. Emile J. McKenney: born in Michigan June 13, 1845, died July 14, 1859 (age 15); on the same gravestone as her parents.
  6. Harriet E. McKenney: born in Michigan August 24, 1848 (1842?), died September 2, 1858 (age 10); on the same gravestone as her parents.
  7. Florence A. McKenney: born in Michigan June 14, 1854, died January 22, 1875 (age 20).
iii. Elizabeth McKenney: Her existence comes from comments by Rose Judson Gilbert on the back of a photograph of her sister, Jane.
iv. Elijah McKenney was born in Newfane, Niagara County, New York, on September 4, 1812. He married Harriet Gaylord.
v. Homer McKenney: He was killed in the Civil War. This information and his existence comes from comments by Rose Judson Gilbert on the back of a photograph of his sister, Jane.
vi. Samuel A. McKenney [#22]: He was born in Monroe County, New York, on November 30, 1816, and died in Byron Township on February 24, 1876.
vii. Jemina Jane McKenney was born in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont, on January 8, 1828, and died on April 13, 1900.

Signature from 1833 land purchase
There is much confusion and inconsistency about the spelling of James W.'s last name. As can be seen, he signed his name McKinney while his children seem to have used McKenney. Census records are inconsistent. The fact that James and Jemima (Kemp) appear on the same gravestone with their son, James K. McKenney, under the general heading of McKenney means there was probably some family dissension about the spelling of their name. To add to the confusion, the McKinney name appears twice in this genealogy: the maiden name of the mother of Samuel McKenney's wife (Elizabeth Jane Norris) was Sarah McKinney. It is even possible (likely) that James W. McKinney and Sarah McKinney were related. Both were born in New York, he in 1775 and she in 1794–5.

From History of Kent County, page 623, are brief biographies of Elijah and James K. McKenney. Each item refers to their parents as "James and Jemima (Kemp) McKenney"; therefore, we know the names are correct. The items also say that James and Jemima went to Newfane, Niagara County in 1811. In 1822 they went to the town of Greece in Monroe County, New York, and bought a farm. However, they later sold it and returned to Newfane. The articles also indicate that both James W. McKenney and Jemima Kemp were of Scotch descent. The birth of Jemina Jane in Vermont in 1828 indicates that the family probably lived in that state for some time.

The 1850 census of Kent County, film #353 at the National Archives, has the following entry. It is adjacent to an entry for James K. McKinney; Elijah McKinney is living "next door" with a family named Ball.

There are also multiple entries for Reuben Kemp who was born about 1740 in Passaic, NJ (north), died April, 1807, in Bourbon, KY, and married May 31, 1762, in Sussex, NJ, to Jane (Jenny) Stewart, born about 1742 in Sussex, NJ, died March, 1819, in Pendleton, KY. The following children are attributed to them:
  1. Charles ~1766 Sussex, NJ
  2. Twin ~1768 Sussex
  3. Edward ~1770 Sussex
  4. Reuben ~1772 Sussex
  5. James ~1774 Sussex
  6. Elizabeth 16May1778 Staten Is., NY. Per http://members.aol.com/joemac1938/marryky.htm, she married: Elijah McClennehan - Elizabeth Kemp, Bourbon County, 21 September 1793. (Father of bride, Reuben Kemp).

  8. Edward ~1782 Staten Is.
  9. Sarah ~1782 Staten Is.

From the birth places of the children, it appears that the family moved from northern New Jersey to Staten Island about 1776.

The 1870 census of Byron Township, Kent County, Michigan (Archives film #681, p. 8), indicates that Jemima Kemp was foreign born. This, of course, conflicts with the 1850 census.
