3435. David Calvin was born in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, U.S.A., on Sunday, June 18, 1775, and died in Center Township, Williams County, Ohio, U.S.A., on January 13, 1854. Catherine McDaniel was born in New Jersey, U.S.A., on Friday, May 15, 1778, and died in Center Township on September 21, 1870. She was usually called Katie. They were both buried in Lick Creek Cemetery, Center Township, Williams County. They were married in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia, about 1800. She took the name Catherine Calvin. He is the son of Joshua and Sarah (Opdyke) Calvin. They had 12 children:

Per Seneca County, Ohio, Marriages, his second wife was Nancy Cassidy (Cosidy); they were married on May 8, 1851. She was born 2 Mar 1813 in Pulteney/Bath, Steuben, New York, daughter of Edward and Susanna(h) McFarland Cassety (Cassedy), d. 30 Aug 1858 in Pulasky, Williams County, OH; both Nancy and Joshua are buried in Lick Creek Cemetery, Center Township, Williams, Ohio. | |
| ii. | Hannah Calvin [#17]: She was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, on August 28, 1804, and died in Middleville, Barry County, Michigan, on January 6, 1879. | |

He married Sarah Kelsey on August 17, 1832, in Portage County, Ohio.
He is buried next to his wife and several other family members at
Lick Creek Cemetery. She was born on August 31, 1811, in Virginia and died

The 1850 Federal census of Center Township, Williams County, Ohio, p. 70, gives this Calvin family: Vincient[sic] Calvin, age 40, farmer, $500 in land; Sarah Calvin 38; John Calvin 17, farmer; Rosette Calvin 15; Sylvester Calvin 13; Luther Calvin 10; Seth Calvin 4; Phebe Calvin 8/12; Aaron Pigg [should be Pegg] 36, shoemaker. All but Sarah were born in Ohio. John Calvin married Hannah Gilbert on February 21, 1856, in Williams County. She was the daughter of Champion Marion Gilbert, who was son of (Lieut.) Charles Gilbert, who was son of Truman Gilbert of this genealogy. | |

The 1850 Federal census of Center Township, Williams County, Ohio, p. 66, gives this Calvin family: Seth Calvin, age 26, $800 in land; Mary, 28; James 6; __ry Ann 4; Sarah 2; and David 2/12. All were born in Ohio. |
As a child, David accompanied his parents to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia), where he grew up and married. After his marriage he is believed to have lived a few years in Loudoun County, Virginia, but in 1804 he and his family moved to Portage County, Ohio. He was the first of his brothers to move to Ohio. Some of his brothers followed him in 1808, and in 1816 the rest of the clan made the move. David and Katie later moved to Williams County, Ohio, and are buried there.
Notes of Rose (Judson) Gilbert, whose husband, Walter, was a grandson of Walter and Hannah, include: "Calvin and wife separated and whereabouts [are] unknownlived in southern part of the stateWalter never saw her."
In Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve, page 188 (Palmyra), is written: "In 1804 Mrs. David Calvin (Catherine McDaniels) settled in the southern part of the township. The first evening they were greeted by their nearest neighbors, the wolves of the forest."
