28–29.  Peter Demoss Youngblood was born in Virginia on Sunday, June 13, 1813, and died in LaGrange, Cass County, Michigan, on January 20, 1887. His date of birth is calculated from his age at death: 73y, 7mo, 7dy. Mary Ann Pollock was born in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., in 1816-1817, and died probably in Cass County, Michigan, U.S.A., about 1856. They were married in Cass County, Michigan, on Thursday, April 24, 1834. She took the name Mary Ann Youngblood. He is the son of Thomas and Martha (Demoss) Youngblood. She is the daughter of John and Mary (_____) Pollock. They had nine children:

i. Jonathan M. Youngblood was born in 1835. He married Margaret Smith; their only children were twins who died at birth. She was born in 1832-33.
ii. Andrew Jackson Youngblood [#28B]: He was born in Cass County, Michigan, U.S.A., on April 5, 1837, and died in Volinia, Cass County, Michigan, U.S.A., on October 8, 1923.

iv. William Owen Youngblood: He married Nettie _____ and had four children: Maud, Elsie, Nettie, Alta. Elsie and Nettie died in childhood. Maud married _____ Austin and had two sons. Alta married, divorced, and remarried. According to Emma Y. Duffy, "Uncle Willie" was fairly well off. He had a beautiful horse and buggy. In later years, his daughters insisted he live with one of them to receive proper care. He lived near Ada, Michigan.
v. Henry Nichol Youngblood was born on October 28, 1845, and died on February 17, 1919. He married Martha Jane Smith on August 13, 1869. She was the daughter of John and Rachel (Beck) Smith of Virginia. She was born on October 29, 1844, and died on June 22, 1903. They are buried in Summerville Cemetery. Children:

  5. Anna Rachel (b. 18 Aug 1886, d. 7 Feb 1948).
(Much is known about their families from Nettie (Youngblood) Walter.) (The dates conform to Cass County Vital Records, vol. I, Sumnerville Cem.) Emma Duffy recalls that Henry had a bad eye from an injury and the children were admonished to not talk about it. Iva Mae was a school teacher in Dowagiac, Michigan; she never married.
vi. Sarah A. Youngblood: She was born November 9, 1847, and died in November, 1936. She married Wallace O. Glazier; they had no children. They lived near Fennville, Michigan. A copy of a newspaper obituary is included below.

viii. Mary A. Youngblood
ix. Elizabeth Youngblood was born in 1854-5. She married _____ Post.

His second marriage was to Sarah Whitmore Coats in Cass County on Sunday, April 11, 1858. She took the name Sarah Whitmore Youngblood. She was born in La Grange, Cass County, Michigan, in 1841-2. They had four children:

i. Anna Youngblood [#28J]: She was born in Michigan on November 20, 1858, and died in Douglas, Allegan County, Michigan, U.S.A., on September 9, 1928.
ii. Martha Youngblood was born in 1862-3. She married Hugh Toner. He hanged himself while they were living in Dowagiac; she then moved to Fennville. They had three children: Neil, Anna, and Irvin. Neil died at about age 4. Anna married Ardillow C. Yeck and had no children; they are buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Cassopolis, Cass County, Michigan. (Yeck information from Benjamin L. Kinsey (e-mail address invalid as of Oct. 2002), April, 2000.) Irvin married and had children Maxine and John.
iii. Charles Youngblood: He died young.
iv. [infant]

Peter Youngblood was born in Virginia, probably in what is now West Virginia. His parents were both immigrants from Prussia (per the 1880 census, which is at odds with the writing of his granddaughter, Nettie, daughter of Andrew). At age 19 he settled in Cass County, Michigan; two years later he and Mary Ann Pollock were married.

The death date of Mary Ann (Pollock) Youngblood has not been determined but it was likely in 1856-57 from the date of the marriage of Peter and his second wife, Sarah Whitmore Coats. Sarah was 24 at her marriage and was born in La Grange, Cass County. Peter died of paralysis.

Peter Youngblood's place of birth has been given as Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia.

Therefore, one can presume that Peter was born in Virginia [perhaps what is now West Virginia; there are many Youngblood families in Morgan Co., WV] and that his family moved to Ohio when he was young. Then in 1832, they moved to Cass County.

Peter Youngblood appears in History of Cass County, Michigan on page 146 in the "Roster of the Cass County Historical Society" for members who joined in 1876. In that reference, his residence is listed as La Grange, his birth place as Virginia, his date of settlement in the county as 1832, and his age when he joined the society as 63 (which puts his date of birth at 1813 and his age when he settled at 19; two years before he and Mary Ann Pollock were married.)

Youngblood, Peter 21--1- ---- ----1- ----
This most likely represents, from left to right: Andrew and Peter (Jr.), Jonathan, Peter (Sr.), and Mary Ann. The next entry on the census page is for the family of Thomas Youngblood including a male age 70–80 and a female age 50–60; this is probably Peter's parents.

Andrew was designated as unable to read or write. That his daughter, 18, was born in Ohio would indicate that they moved to Michigan in 1832 or later.

Page 250 of the 1860 census for LaGrange, Cass County, has the following entry for what is clearly the family of Peter and Mary Ann Youngblood. Mary Ann died about three years before the census was taken and Peter remarried Sarah (second line). Peter's age of 75 is probably an error. Either this is a totally unknown Peter who as also born in Virginia, or his age should be about 55 instead of 75; the latter is assumed.

The 1840 census of La Grange, Cass County, Michigan (page 215) shows John Pollock: 1m10-15, 2m15-20, 1m50-60 (John), 1f20-30, 1f50-60. The 1850 census of La Grange, page 308A, gives John Pollock, age 58, born in Ireland (Archives film #349). The 1860 census shows, immediately following the family of Peter D. Youngblood, James Pollock 38 b. Ohio, Bridget 43 b. Pa., and John 71 b. Ireland. One is tempted to assume that John Pollock is Mary Ann's father. If this is true, he is the most recent immigrant in the genealogy, having been born in 1788-92, immigrated before 1817 when Mary Ann was born in Penn. (Other Pollocks immigrated to Penn. from Ireland, namely John, James, Charles, and Samuel who came in about 1750 [Lib of Cong CS71-P777 1884].)

From Cass County, Michigan Families, vol. 35 (Michigan State Library, Lansing): John Pollock: d. 1864; from Ireland; settled in 150 acres in section 7 of Pokagon Township; wife Mary; d. 1848; 7 children. One child was John O. Pollock who had 6 children. (No others were given.)

MRS. SARAH A. GLAZIER,
CASS RESIDENT, BURIED
CASSOPOLIS, Nov. 26. — Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah A. Glazier, 89, were held in the home of her sister, Mrs. Martha Toner, with Mrs. Sarah Bishop, pastor of the Church of God, officiating. Services were also held in Fennville. Burial was in Fennville cemetery.
Mrs. Glazier was born Nov. 9, 1847, the daughter of Peter Youngblood. She was one of a family of several children, of whom the following survive: Mrs. Martha Toner, Cassopolis; Mrs. Anna Hoffman, Holland; Frank Youngblood, Kalamazoo.
She was united in marriage to Wallace O. Glazier, who died 16 years ago.
The Dowagiac Daily News, on 17 Oct 1898, reported that James Pollock died on 16 Oct 1898. He was a pioneer of Pennsylvania and Michigan and had a brother, J. O. Pollock. He was well known in the city and county. He was very old and died of a lingering illness. He was a resident of La Grange before that section ceased to be wilderness. (Since the 1860 census shows James to be 38 and John, Sr. to be 71, then James was born about 1822 and was about 76 when he died. His father was born in about 1789 and was about 75 when he died.)

In the search for the parents of Mary Ann Pollock, we know from the census that she was born in 1816-7 in Pennsylvania. A search of the International Genealogical Index yielded many people named Mary () Pollock. Of those, the following appear to be the most promising.
