His mother spelled his middle name "Burl" in the family bible. Harriet Mitchel died about 1918. They were married in 1913?. She took the name Harriet Youngblood. He is the son of Benjamin Franklin and Margaret Lydia (Tenbroeck) Youngblood. They had no children.

His second marriage was to Frances Beckwith in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, on Saturday, November 5, 1921. She took the name Frances Youngblood. She was born in _____ on Monday, April 26, 1897, and died in Paw Paw, Van Buren County, Michigan, on October 15, 1967. She is the daughter of Thomas and Wilhelmina (Windschantz) Beckwith. Frances had three sisters: Florence, Libby, and Nora. They had four children:

Harry left the farm and moved to Grand Rapids where he found work at Jandorf's well-known bakery. He learned to be a baker, finally accumulating his own recipes which he took with him when he moved to Kalamazoo. Here he worked for Cade's Bakery, and later for Dawn Doughnut. His kept his personal recipes secret, only passing them on to his son, Gerald. One of his recipes was for plain doughnuts, fried cakes, which he would make in the front window of the Dawn Doughnut Company. The author recalls always stopping at the bakery on his occasional trips past and being treated to a doughnut hot from the oil. He also had several special bread recipes, probably including salt rising, a local favorite.
