1300–1301.  Simon Couch was born about 1633, and died in Fairfield, Connecticut, in 1687/8. Mary Andrews? died in Fairfield about 1691. They had seven children:

i. Thomas Couch died in 1691. His will was dated April 8, 1689, and proved on December 2, 1691: "voyaging to England"; mother Mary Couch; brother Simon's eldest son; brother Samuel's eldest son.
ii. Simon Couch [#650]: He was born about 1660, and died in Fairfield in 1712-1713.
iii. Mary Couch: She married first Thomas Grumman; second James Bennett after 1691, "Shipwright", divorced him 1703; married third Samuel Jennings, by a contract dated October 24, 1727.
iv. Samuel Couch
v. Martha Couch: She married Abraham Finch.
vi. Sarah Couch
vii. Hannah Couch: She married first Peter Coley about 1699; second Joshua Hoyt.

Simon Couch bought land in Fairfield from Anna, widow of Francis Andrews, on March 14, 1663/4, from William Hayden on May 24, 1664, and from Robert Beacham on May 25, 1665.

Four people named Couch came to Connecticut, but not early.

  1. Simon, subject of this entry.
  2. William died at Guilford, 12 Sept. 1689; no family known.
  3. Samuel settled at Milford; m. (1) Pity, childless widow of Charles Deal, by whose gift he had Charles Island; m.(2) in 1691 Mary, widow of Vincent Stilson. His will, June 1693, referred to marriage agreement with wife Mary; his homelot in Milford, Charles Island, etc., to daughter Elizabeth Couch living in St. Mary Ottery, county Devon, England; but if she come not over in seven yrs., then all to Nathaniel, son of Capt. Samuel Eells of Hingham, Mass.
  4. Thomas bought land from John Stiles in Wethersfield, 1665, and m.(1) 22 Nov. 1666, Rebecca _____, who d. 1 Mar. 1671/2; m. (2) Hannah _____. The inventory of Thomas's estate, 24 Mar. 1687; widow Hannah; ages of children: Susannah 20, Simon 18, Rebecca 15, Hannah 13, Thomas 12, Mary 11, Sarah 8, Abigail 6, Martha 3. Legacy to children from their uncle Simon Couch mentioned. Simon was certainly brother of Thomas of Wethersfield, and prob. also of Samuel of Milford.

The will of Simon Couch was dated 22 Dec. 1687 and proved 15 Mar. 1687/8: wife Mary; eldest son Thomas; 2d son Simon; 3d son Samuel; brother's son Thomas Couch that lives with me; brother's daughter living at John Grumman's; cousin Susannah Couch living at Milford; eldest daus., Mary and Martha; daughters Sarah and Hannah.

The inventory of the estate of Mary Couch was dated 22 May 1691 and exhibited 27 Dec. 1691. Administration was granted to Simon and Samuel Couch. Order to distribute to the children: Thomas ("if he never come into this Country again"); Simon; Samuel; widow Mary Grumman; Martha, Hannah and Sarah Couch.

Mary Couch conveyed 1689 to brother Thomas. Samuel Couch receipted 1694 to brother Simon for legacy from mother Mary dec'd. Abraham Finch receipted 1697 for legacy from fatherin-law Couch. Peter Coley receipted 1703 for legacy of Hannah Couch, his present wife.
