1064–1065.  Arthur Bostwick was baptized in St. Holger Church, Tarporley, county Cheshire, England, on Thursday, December 22, 1603, and died in Stratford, Connecticut, after December 10, 1680. His name also appears as Arthur Bostock. Jane Whittle was born in England and died between 1638 and 1659. They were married in St. Helen's Parish Church, Tarporley, county Cheshire, England, on Tuesday, January 8, 1627/8. She took the name Jane Bostwick. He is the son of Arthur and Ellen (Dennis) Bostock. She is the daughter of Robert Whittel, (Rev.). They had five children:

i. Mary Bostwick was baptized in St. Helen's Parish Church on January 18, 1629/30. She married George Dobson on September 24, 1653.
ii. Jane Bostwick was baptized in St. Helen's Parish Church on January 29, 1631/2.
iii. Ellen Bostwick was baptized in Tarporley, county Cheshire, England, on December 22, 1633, and died in Stratford. She married Thomas Johnson before 1651; he is reported to be a son from the first marriage of Ellen Johnson, Arthur Bostwick's second wife. He died November 5, 1695, in Newark, New Jersey.
iv. Arthur Bostwick was baptized in St. Helen's Parish Church on May 8, 1636.
v. John Bostwick [#532]: He was baptized in Tarporley on October 18, 1638, and died in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, on December 11, 1688.

His second marriage was to Ellen Johnson in Connecticut in 1659. She took the name Ellen Bostwick. She was born in England and died in Stratford. Her maiden name was possibly Helen Tomlinson. She was buried in 1677/8. They had no children.

The marriage and list of children, including all dates, comes from church records of St. Helen's Parish. This information was not available to Jacobus, who wrote:

Ellen [his second wife] was quite likely the childless widow of a brother of Henry Tomlinson, and she appears to have come over with her first husband bringing a young relative Elizabeth Bourn who married (1) John Welles and (2) John Wilcoxson.

Agreement with wife, Ellen, on February 9, 1674/5; signed also by John Bostwick, and mention is made of "sd Arthurs other children" witnessed by Henry Tomlinson and John Minor. Ellen's estate was appraised on January 28, 1674/5 by William Curtis, Henry Tomlinson, and John Minor; included "ye halfe of ye girle" £6, and "ye other halfe of ye girle by agreement between Arthur Bostwick and Ellene," £6; recorded at Stratford on May 21, 1677.

After Ellen's death (before Arthur), claim to part of her estate was made (and allowed) by Mrs. Elizabeth Wilcoxson, sometime Elizabeth Bourne, next of kin with her children to the deceased, Elizabeth having been brought by the deceased and "Mr. Tomlin" from her natural friends. The residue was ordered divided between: children of Hannah Porter for care of her; her husband "After Bostwick"; John Bostwick and his wife and the wife of her son Johnson of New Jersey; and Temperance and Sarah Welles, daughters of said Elizabeth by her first husband.

In New Haven records, April 1663, Thomas Johnson claimed a debt on behalf of "his father in law Bausticke of Stratford."

The statement, above, that Thomas Johnson was the son-in-law of Arthur "Bausticke", implies that Thomas was the son of Arthur's second wife, Ellen. In this case, her first husband would have been named Johnson. It is possible that either her maiden name was Tomlinson or she was (briefly) married to a Tomlinson after her first marriage.

Per Genealogical Register ..., the Bostwick family is of Saxon origin and can trace its descent to the time of Edward the Confessor, who preceded Harold, the last of the Saxon kings, upon the throne of England. Like all ancient names, it has undergone some mutations in more than seven centuries. Arthur's name was originally spelled Bostock.

Arthur and Jane came to America in 1641-2 and located at Stratford, Connecticut, being one of the first 17 setting families of that town.

Note that in The History of Stratford 1639—1937 by W. Wilcoxson, p. 98, Jane Whittel is listed as the daughter of William Whittel and niece of Rev. Robert Whittel.
