I forget whether it was at some point in the line of supplements, or a revision of the entire product run, but I fondly remembered the two sided counters signifying "in play" or "wrecked". "Wrecked" of course often spawning a 1/8" x 1/4" pedestrian counter. Of course, as professional autoduelists, we always adhered to AADA prohibitions against chasing down, strafing, incinerator, or otherwise causing harm to pedestrianized drivers. At least in sanctioned arenas. Do you remember if the peds had an "out of play" side?
Oil slick counters too. More I think on it, my favorite video game of the period, spyhunter, in many ways was merely a video remediation of car wars.

Car Wars (and other SJ games) had production values that were way ahead of their time--most of the other board games I was playing then had counter art that looked something like this:
