Generation Gap

In this week’s City Paper, our free alternative weekly here in DC (page 129 for those of you playing along at home):

A black and white photo ad showing a guy and a girl, young and dressed to impress. The guy’s blond, moussed, he’s got his sleeves rolled. The girl’s in a crop top and jeans, her lower back tattoed. (You know the look.) Both turn their bare upper arms to face the camera. The copy:

“This is not your parent’s smallpox vaccine!”

Well. Bet you didn’t see that one coming. Turns out it’s the National Institutes of Health and some other federal agencies recruiting “healthy adults 18-31 years old” to participate in an experimental vaccination program. Homeland security meets the Gap.
